A community reintegration model for violent juvenile offenders was constructed after a review of treatment programs, pertinent literature, and evaluation findings. The model is supported by the underlying principles of social networking, provision of youth opportunities, social learning, and goal-oriented interventions.
Abstract
The underlying principles and processes are integrated with the program design through four structural components: case management, multiphased program, community reintegration, and program autonomy. Treatment approaches designed both to strengthen social and personal bonds and to address individual problems and factors related to violent delinquency must be available. The range of treatment approaches should include medical care and health services, education, job training and placements, constructive living arrangements, individual and family counseling, mental health treatment approaches, and leisure-time activities. Key issues associated with model implementation are the commitment and ability of the implementing agency to test the model, the creation of juvenile justice linkages to the implementing agency, and the inclusion of an evaluation component to ensure model implementation, effectiveness, and assessment. Two figures and 10 references are included.
