This thesaurus contains listings of 4,601 descriptors or terms used to index literature in the National Institute of Justice/National Criminal Justice Reference Service document data base and to retrieve information about the literature for users of the service.
Abstract
An introduction explains the notations which accompany these descriptors and notes that two types of terms are listed, those actually used for indexing and searching and synonyms included to provide as many points of entry to the thesaurus as possible. Instructions on using the thesaurus cover the alphabetization system and searching techniques, with examples. These suggestions emphasize the importance of selecting the most specific descriptor on a concept to ensure full retrieval of relevant information. Each entry includes cross references.
