Abstract
A statement presented by an unnamed witness who is an ordained minister and a former high school teacher chronicles his sexual involvement with children and his eventual conviction on 14 counts, including 11 counts of sodomy in different degrees and 3 charges relating to the distribution of pornographic literature, alcohol, and marijuana. Statements are provided by a panel consisting of the Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice (Mark Richard) and the Deputy Assistant Director, Organized Crime Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation (Dana E. Caro). Richard presents statistical data on child pornography prosecutions and notes that since May 1977, 47 persons have been convicted; none have been acquitted. Caro explains that by December 21, 1981, the FBI had investigated 482 cases under the Federal statute outlining the sexual exploitation of children. These investigations resulted in 33 indictments, 8 complaints, 4 informations, and 23 convictions. Charles Nelson, Assistant Chief Postal Inspector for the U.S. Postal Service, notes that there are approximately 75 inspectors working throughout the Nation to investigate pornography cases. Statements from Robert Schaffer, Director of the Office of Inspections for U.S. Customs, Paula Hawkins, U.S. Senator from Florida, and John Walsh, member of the Board of Directors for the Adam Walsh Child Resource Center, are also provided.
