This guide to the first level -- Headstart, kindergarten through grade 2 -- of a curriculum for prevention of child sexual abuse contains background material for teachers, resource lists, and a detailed outline of the 12-day course.
Abstract
The curriculum's objectives are to give students the knowledge and ability to identify sexual abuse, a sense of having the right to control their bodies in exchanges of physical affection, assertive techniques for telling someone not touch them, confidence that their family or community support system will believe them, ability to select a mate who will not abuse their children, and knowledge of ways to ensure their children's personal safety. Charts provide overviews of all levels of the curriculum, including learning objectives and performance indicators. To help professionals feel comfortable in teaching the curriculum, a background information section discusses using language that children understand, statistics on child sexual abuse, differences between rape and other sexual abuse, indicators of sexual abuse, reporting, the legal process, and helping the sexually abused child. Resource numbers for reporting abuse in Washington State are presented, along with lists of films, pamphlets, and books for children and adults. All levels of the curriculum have four units: personal safety, appropriate and inappropriate touching, assertiveness techniques, and support systems. Charts detail objectives for each of the 12 lessons, resource materials, and activities that promote these objectives. The preschool-grade 2 program discusses feelings; private parts of the body; and positive, negative, and confusing touching. It encourages children to tell a trusted adult about sexual abuse. Pretest and posttests, a glossary, a student evaluation form, and an annotated bibliography of about 35 citations are provided. The appendixes contain the Tacoma School District's reporting policy and forms, excerpts from Washington State law, educational materials sent to parents about the curriculum, and a teacher's evaluation form.
