The objectives of a demonstration project designed to prevent adolescent abuse are examined, and the agency responsible for the project, the Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center and its hospital and clinical affiliates, is introduced.
Abstract
The program's expected results and benefits are discussed, including increased community awareness of adolescent abuse and the training of professionals to treat parents and adolescents, using short-term therapeutic strategies within the workshop format. The theoretical background and rationale for the workshops are explored, and outlines of the 12-session adolescent and parent workshops are included. A timetable for the project is presented: its first phase will last 2.5 months and will involve planning and scheduling staff meetings, recruiting staff, and conducting a public relations campaign; the second phase will involve running the parent and adolescent workshops. Each workshop will take 12 weeks, and they will start simultaneously. Project personnel and evaluation instruments are discussed. Appendixes contain parents' reactions to previous workshops, the problem record sheet, the seven-point anger arousal scale, homework and evaluation forms, letters of support, resumes, references, and a brochure on the treatment of childhood emotional disorders. Approximately 100 references are listed.
