This manual provides the information needed by New Jersey police officers to conduct a home security survey, with attention to door systems, windows, security habits, and Operation Identification.
Abstract
An introduction identifies the benefits to police of conducting home security surveys and gives suggestions on points to emphasize in the survey, publicizing the services, and followup activities. Basic security tips that the officer should tell the homeowner are outlined. A discussion of weaknesses in door systems and their remedies considers frames, materials, thickness, the presence of glass or panels, and special door types like garage and sliding glass doors. Several types of door locks and ways to reinforce strike plates are explained. Also discussed are door hinges, padlocks, hinging hasps, and securing detached buildings such as storage sheds. Particular vulnerabilities of different types of windows are examined, and security devices -- latches, locks, pinning, a charlie bar, and bars -- are described. The manual also reviews alarm systems and Operation Identification for marking property. Numerous diagrams and charts as well as a home security survey are included.
