This review of intrusion detection devices covers the potential users; describes influences on current sensor design; provides detailed descriptions of closed circuit televisions (CCTV's), video motion detection, and passive infrared, ultrasonic, microwave, sonic, seismic, and shock sensors; and examines the role of the Department of Defense (DOD) in the development of intrusion detection devices.
Abstract
Intrusion detection devices are an indispensable part of most security installations. The three markets for electronic intrusion detection systems are the high value industrial, commercial/low value, and residential. The development of the microprocessor in the early 1970's allowed portable, accurate, low-cost devices that could perform a greater range of signal processing functions on a detected signal and could process multiple sensor configurations to identify and track targets. The DOD need to protect its worldwide nuclear weapon storage sites and delivery platforms spurred the development of intrusion detection sensor technologies. In the future, regulatory actions directed against certain classes of intrusion detection sensors with questionable performance levels will result in some companies leaving the field. Developments within the DOD surveillance and physical security programs and activities in robotic visual systems will catapult CCTV's into primary sensors rather than assessment tools. New forms of 'smart' CCTV's are of particular interest. Finally, companies that possess strong digital signal processing capabilities (developed through DOD) are the strongest contenders for providing the necessary technologies and products demanded by the marketplace. Some tabular data are provided.
