This codebook lists the variables and coding used for the data set of the 1974 Juvenile Detention and Correctional Facility Census mail survey of 829 facilities.
Abstract
The census surveyed the number and kinds of juvenile detention facilities with a resident population of at least 50-percent juveniles. Of the 396 State-administered and 433 locally administered facilities, there were 330 detention centers; 21 shelters; 20 reception or diagnostic centers; 186 training schools; 107 ranches, forestry camps, and farms; and 165 halfway houses and group homes. There was a 100-percent response rate. Included in the survey were the total number of juveniles held as of June 30, 1974, as well as the breakdown of the numbers in each type of facility. Also presented are numbers and breakdown (by sex) of detention and status offenses for juveniles; numbers of full-time and part-time staff; payroll and nonpayroll staff; and capital, total operating, and per capita expenditures.
