This codebook documents the official record data obtained in the Rand Corporation's Second Inmate Survey, a multisite, self-administered survey of male inmates at 12 prisons and 14 county jails in California, Michigan, and Texas conducted in 1978-79.
Abstract
The study's purpose was to provide detailed information on inmates' criminal behavior, selective incapacitation, and prison treatment programs. The codebook is a companion to a computer tape containing data from the survey and available from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. For each question in the survey instrument, the codebook reproduces the exact text and specifies all permissible responses and their codes. Where applicable, individual questions are annotated with respect to the intended interpretation of the question and the experience gained while administering and processing the survey. An overview of the survey is also included. (Author summary modified)
