After discussing research methodology (study description, sampling, and information processing) for the 1971 census of juvenile detention and correctional facilities, which provides information on facilities and residents, the variable table of contents, a codebook description, and the codebook itself are provided.
Abstract
The census covered July 1, 1970-June 30, 1971, and involved 722 State and local juvenile facilities classified in one of the following categories: detention centers; shelters; reception or diagnostic centers; training schools; ranches, forestry camps, and farms; and halfway houses and qroup homes. Variables included type of facility; level of government administering the facility; agency identifier; resident population by sex, age, range, detention status, and offense; admissions and discharges; average length of stay; staffing and expenditures; age and capacity of facility; and available programs and services. Appendixes contain term definitions, a discussion of errors and problems in the data, a list of counties, and a description of the OSIRIS III Type 3 dictionary.
