After briefly describing the evaluation design used by the Vera Institute to assess its Court Employment Project (CEP) -- a pretrial intervention project in New York City designed to place accused offenders into jobs, training, or vocational counseling -- this document presents the codebook to the data file compiled for the evaluation.
Abstract
The evaluation collected data on 410 CEP participants and 256 non-CEP offenders in a control group. Three interviews were conducted at 6-month intervals with each subject to gather information on self-report criminal activity, work experience, social service and training needs, income, and educational activities. Data on arrests were taken from New York City Police Department records. Variables examined included age, sex, race, charges, previous training and jobs, satisfaction with CEP, attendance at counseling sessions, employment found and job attendance, and subsequent arrests and convictions. The interview questionnaire is provided.
