Emphasizing the importance of identifying the library needs of both prisoners and staff, the book recommends the following types of material for prison libraries: material supporting basic education, material for ethnic minority groups, recreational materials, periodicals, paperbacks, large-print books, reference materials, and audiovisuals. Issues in selecting, displaying, circulating, and storing materials are examined. The duties and training of library staff -- the prison education officer, professional librarian, prison officer librarian, and inmate assistant -- are reviewed. In addition to discussing library location, space, and equipment requirements, the book also reviews lighting and acoustics for the library. A chapter is devoted to library financing and management. Appended materials include lists of guideline committee members, a list of relevant Home Office standing orders, prison library staff job specifications, and an organization chart.
