Statistics from 115 sources are compiled in six groupings: characteristics of the criminal justice system, public attitudes toward crime and criminal-justice-related topics, the nature and distribution of known offenses, the characteristics and distribution of persons arrested, the judicial processing of defendants, and persons under correctional supervision. Tables and figures for 1984 are cross-referenced with their 1983 edition counterparts. A total of 528 tables and 93 figures are included, along with a subject index, appendixes presenting definitions and methodology, an annotated bibliography of sources, and a list of the 85 publishers of source documents and their addresses.
