In January of each year, 100,000 persons in St. Louis County are selected from the total computer files; these files were created by merging a computer tape listing all registered voters with a tape listing all registered drivers. All jurors for the year are selected and called from these names. The computer prepares a card for each prospective juror and lists the statutory conditions that might cause him to be ineligible for service. If such conditions exist, the person notifies the court and his name is withdrawn. However, if the individual is eligible to serve, he completes a questionnaire, and the data is entered into the computer. When the juror reports for duty, he is checked in by computer, and any corrections or additions to his biographical data are made. Among the benefits resulting from the computerized system are a better geographical representation of jurors and an improved attitude toward jury service by citizens and their employers. Several problems have also emerged, however, including increased postage costs and slow check-in procedures. Efforts are underway to remedy these problems and to implement two additional changes: a one-step summons and a telephone call-in system. Additionally, the possibility of being able to check in jurors without complete biographies is being explored. An equipment description and menu list are included, as are eight attachments.
