Israel is both one of the world's major arms exporters and a party or accessory to state-organized terrorism in Guatemala, South Africa, and perhaps other countries as well.
Abstract
According to estimates by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, Israel is the fifth largest exporter of arms in the world and the largest supplier of arms to Latin American and sub-Saharan Africa. However, Israel has more wide-ranging activities in the Third World; it is active in all dimensions of the global counterinsurgency effort. Its security activities, based on its domestic experience in the West Bank and Gaza, go beyond cooperation to the establishment and training of several military and security services in Third World countries. The official and semiofficial explanations are that Israel is trying to further its arms sales and technological exports as well as improve its diplomatic ties with these countries. However, the real reasons are political. Israel's strategy is apparently to maximize its regional gains in exchange for participation in the United States collective security system. The United States, Israeli, and South African strategies constitute one pool of imperialist and counterinsurgency expertise and technology. A discussion of the relationship of recent trends to Zionism and anti-Semitism and a list of 64 references are supplied.
