This manual lists the variables, coding information, and some of the results for the data set produced by the 1983 National Jail Census, the fourth in a series of data collection efforts aimed at studying the Nation's locally administered jails.
Abstract
The data cover 3,338 jails in 45 States. Topics include the types of inmates, capacity, building renovation and plans, types of programs provided, number of confinement units and those used, correctional staff, expenditure data, and the health and safety of inmates. A total of 452 variables are included, reflecting jails operating on June 30, 1983. Data are available in two formats: card image and OSIRIS. Details on each variable and appendixes presenting the study questionnaire and descriptive statistics resulting from the study are provided.
