Study data came from 67 percent of the 684 criminal justice agencies in the State. The survey produced numerical breakdowns of each agency's workforce by race, sex, salary, and job category. Professional II, the job category with the largest number of employees (61.8 percent of the total workforce), had the highest representation of white males (90 percent) of any of the job categories. All of the job categories except office/clerical and paraprofessional had a white male representation of over 80 percent, with total male representation of over 87 percent. Police had the highest white male percentage (84.3 percent) of any program area. The police had only 12.2 percent women, only 3.4 percent minority male, and only 1.4 percent minority female. Courts had 61.5 percent women, largely because of the preponderance of office and clerical jobs. Possible remedies of office and clerical jobs. Possible remedies suggested include reexamining requirements of all positions to remove discriminatory conditions, conducting a massive public relations campaign and recruitment effort, vigorous enforcement of affirmative action mandates, establishing employment services to place women and minorities in positions traditionally closed to them, and monitoring of the use of women and minorities in all programs and job categories.
