This Ohio study shows that turnover rates among law enforcement officers completing basic training from 1974 to 1979 were lower in medium and large cities' agencies than in small cities' agencies.
Abstract
The 125 officers surveyed for this study were part of a larger law enforcement task analysis study. Original home agencies of the 125 officers were contacted in May 1981. A total of 46.9 percent were with their original agencies; 49.6 percent were gone from their original agencies; and no answers were given for 4 percent. Most of those still in their original agencies were in entry level positions. Turnover rates were associated with agency and jurisdiction size, perhaps because of better salaries, benefits, equipment, and advancement opportunities in the larger departments. However, large counties lost more officers than medium-sized counties. Tables and figures are included.
