The data are divided into two groups: violent offenses (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and property offenses (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson). Additional data cover population estimates, rates of change in crime and arrest data over various time periods, drug-related arrests for adults and juveniles, Part II misdemeanor offenses, offenses by type of weapon or type of premise, and age group indicators. Analysis reveals that the number of reported Crime Index offenses declined 12 percent in 1983 from the previous year; violent crime declined 10.9 percent and property crime 12.3 percent. Most striking was the 15.5-percent decline in burglary and the 15.7-percent decline in robbery. Finally, slight decreases in arrests occurred for both property and violent crimes.
