This 2-day hearing held in Corpus Christi, Tex., in December 1983 examined drug trafficking from South America in southern Texas, drug use in southern Texas, drug treatment and prevention activities, and cooperation between Federal and local law enforcement agencies in addressing the problem.
Abstract
The 14 speakers included elected officials at the State and local levels; Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials; corrections officials; school officials; and representatives of community organizations. Topics covered in the testimony included the extent of drug trafficking from South America; the extent of heroin addiction in the Brownsville, Tex., area; and drug treatment and prevention activities in the region. Other topics considered were Federal efforts to counter illegal drug trafficking and drug use, cooperation between local and Federal law enforcement officials, and the impact of drug abuse in the area. Written statements focus on these issues and on the problem of drug use among youths and the efforts needed or being taken by schools.
