The programs emphasize community involvement. The sheriff's department has designed a broad-based volunteer organization and has trained more than 600 citizens to help in the effort since 1982. Over 250 volunteers with advanced training are currently active. Over 15,000 families in the county now take part in Neighborhood Watch, and burglary has dropped by 32 percent since 1981. The Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers provide administrative help at the department's headquarters and the six district substations and help expand community awareness and use of residential crime prevention practices. The department's Community Resources Section has four crime prevention officers who promote crime prevention through the Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers, Neighborhood Watch, home security efforts, Operation Identification, child molestation prevention, commercial crime prevention, and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Other activities are the crime prevention fair, a newsletter, and public service announcements. Four school resource officers work with local public school children promoting crime prevention, safety awareness, good citizenship, and positive relations between youths and law enforcement.
