Abstract
A chapter on auto theft explains the reasons why automobiles are stolen, lists six steps that will prevent 85 percent of auto thefts, and explains the operations of professional auto theft rings. Devices that are effective and ineffective in preventing thefts by professionals are explained. A discussion of burglary covers differences between daytime and nighttime burglary and the use of burglar alarms and other security systems. Ways of preventing and dealing with business and home robbery and behaviors to use if confronted by a robber are detailed. Common confidence games are explained, including pyramid selling, home improvement frauds, short-changing, bogus checks, and other forms of fraud. Guidelines for prevention of rape and for action after becoming a rape victim are given. Additional chapters cover shoplifting, murder, and vice crime such as gambling and prostitution. An epilogue gives suggestions for correctional reform.
