Abstract
A brief history of the shotgun and an explanation of shotgun ballistics notes that the shotgun is more effective and deadly than the pistol and is comparable in effectiveness to high powered rifles, at short ranges. Patterns produced on the target by different types of shot at different ranges are explained and illustrated using diagrams of the human body. The penetration ability of various shotgun loads, patterns of wounds, and vulnerable areas of the human body are discussed. The lethal and nonlethal uses of shotguns in combat situations are described, and basic tactics are outlined. Planning for and using shotguns in police work and in-home defense are explained. Scenaris are presented illustrating ambush situations, chasing suspects, hostage decisionmaking, and dealing with a store holdup. Questions and answers relating to the use of shotguns are also supplied.
