This paper examines the characteristics and recidivism of 820 shock probationers released from Iowa prisons since the enactment of this legislation in January, 1978.
Abstract
Their experience is compared with the recidivism of samples of parolees, straight probationers, and persons sentenced to residential facilities or halfway houses using failure rate analysis. The most significant variables that relate to the recidivism of all male shock probationers were found to be age, prior juvenile or adult commitments, unemployment, and marital status. The length of time that shock probationers are incarcerated was not found to be significantly related to recidivism. (Author abstract)
