Tabular data indicate the geographic areas in which assaults have occurred, situations leading up to the assaults, types of weapons used, type of duty assigned to the assaulted officer, clearance rates, and whether or not injuries resulted. The report notes that in 1983, 842 Iowa police officers were assaulted in the line of duty. Disturbance calls continued to be the circumstance most likely to lead to assaults. Most assaults involved no weapons other than hands, fists, and feet. In each population category, the majority of assaults did not result in injury. Assaults in each population category were most likely to be directed at uniformed (as opposed to plainclothes) officers. Officers assigned to one-person vehicles were assault victims more often than those in two-person units. Appendixes contain data on police assaults by type of assignment by population group for 1983, police assaults by weapon used by type of call by population group for 1983, and assaults on police officers by population categories and agencies for 1983.
