This manual describes the role and duties of a part-time trainer in creating a successful correctional staff training program.
Abstract
The importance of the part-time trainer's preparation is first noted -- knowledge of the manager's expectations and of the participants and the logistics, as well as specific preparation for an effective presentation. Contracting with the training manager is discussed, with emphasis on the usefulness of an agreement and its being a learning process for the part-time trainer. Logistics questions, such as the availability of a teaching room and materials, as well as the possible duties of support staff to help the trainer are addressed. Guidelines for preparing a training presentation are given, noting objectives for the trainees. Developing a format for a lesson plan is explained. A lesson should have measurable goals, motivate trainees, be clearly presented, and provide an application stage to involve trainees. A summary and evaluation of the trainees' knowledge are also included in the lesson plan. Although part-time trainers seldom have extensive teaching experience, they must develop a teaching strategy. Therefore, helpful teaching methods for experienced adult learners are given, including the lecture, demonstration, group discussion, and methods that employ more trainee participation, such as problem solving, case study, critical incident study, brainstorming, and role playing. The importance of evaluation to the trainer is cited, and different methods are described. A checklist is provided to assist the part-time trainer in successfully preparing for conducting a training program. Seven reference notes and a resources list are included.
