Firearms assaults are increasing in the United States. Research that has focused on the victims of firearms assaults suggests that younger persons, males, lower income persons and blacks are the most common victims of gun assaults. This study examines characteristics of victims of gun abuse which previously have not been systematically examined.
Abstract
The factors found to be most useful for differentiating between persons assaulted and not assaulted, in addition to sex and race, are general violence experience, arrest status, and alcohol use. Data used in this study were from the National Opinion Research Center's General Social Survey's. Two analytical procedures were used: contingency analysis and discriminant analysis. Using seven predictors it was possible to explain over 19 percent of the variance in victimization and to correctly classify nearly 77 percent of the data. (Author abstract)
