This report briefly describes the data collection procedures, file structure, codebook information, and file structure, codebook information, and information processing of the 1979-83 Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) and presents the SHR variable description list and codebook.
Abstract
In contrast to the data collection procedures for the basic UCR form, where one offense is counted for each victim of a personal crime, the SHR's unit of analysis is the incident, which may involve more than one victim. Information on single or multiple victim and offender homicides was gathered and categorized in a six-level situation code keyed to each victim. The SHR is available in two formats: logical record and OSIRIS. Information was processed according to standard procedures of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. The variable description list presents variables under the general categories of the ages, genders, races, and ethnic origins of victims and offenders as well as weapon used, the relationship of victim to offender, and offender circumstances.
