Abstract
The process of addiction is described, and the pharmacology and long- and short-term effects of the various drugs of abuse are detailed, including alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, inhalants, and hallucinogens. Personality characteristics of healthy and abusing adolescents are discussed. Factors that may contribute to alcohol and drug abuse then are examined, including low self-esteem, poor family and social support and skills, escapism, and peer pressure. The personal, emotional, educational, and physical consequences of abuse are presented as well. A parents' guide provides information on the prevention, identification, and treatment of adolescent drug and alcohol abuse. Treatment issues are reviewed, including the goals of treatment, considerations in choosing a therapist, and outpatient versus inpatient treatment. A number of community-based approaches to chemical dependency are described such as task forces, parents' groups, peer facilitators, and school educational and counseling programs. Finally, guidelines are presented for parents in dealing with confronting behavior, sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy, and runaways. Also provided is a chart of drug abuse information, a glossary, and lists of information and referral resources. Index and 63-item bibliography.
