Over the 5-year period, use of the probation sentence for adults increased 31 percent, from 28,798 in 1980 to 37,595 in 1984. The following offenses accounted for 85 percent of the probation cases over the study period: assault, burglary, criminal mischief, grand larceny, robbery, criminal possession of stolen property, drug offenses, weapons offenses, and driving drug offenses, weapons offenses, and driving while intoxicated.
