A review of social myths about delinquency and the rights of minors precedes a look at definitions, measurement, and attributes of juvenile delinquency and a discussion of theories of and approaches to juvenile delinquency. Special attention is given to such correlates of social control as family change, education, religion, work, and leisure. Forms of juvenile misconduct and delinquent behavior (including group and gang behaviors) are delineated. Included are such topics as runaways, juvenile suicide, arson, and the escalation from status offenses to more serious delinquent behavior. Finally, the workings of the juvenile justice system are examined from contact in the community through incarceration and community reintegration. The text focuses on case processing by the police, courts, and correctional systems and probation, parole, aftercare, and treatment.
