One witness testifies about a neighborhood mediation-conciliation program designed to resolve conflicts between community residents. It is noted to be particularly effective with those who take the initiative in contacting the service in an effort to resolve disputes peaceably and without criminal justice intervention. Witnesses also focus on racially motivated violence, primarily under the influence of white supremist groups. Some suggestions for dealing with such violence include education and the provision of positive community opportunities for youth attracted to racist organizations. Gang-related violence is also discussed by witnesses. One effective approach described involves interagency cooperation with the criminal justice system to target violent gang members for arrest and prosecution. Other violence discussed includes spouse abuse, rape, child sexual abuse, and drug-related violence.
