The analysis considered adult arrests for child molestation, oral copulation, sodomy, unlawful sex, rape, insertion of a foreign object, misdemeanor child annoying, and attempted offenses from 1980 to 1989. The use of pornography ranged from the casual availability of pornography to the production of pornography during victimization. The analysis found that adult pornography, child pornography, or both were recovered in 54.7 percent of the cases which involved 313 males and 7 females. The use of search warrants in 59.1 percent of the cases showed them to be an invaluable method of obtaining physical evidence. In addition, most offenders were felony offenders, and the conviction rate was 85 percent. Findings indicated that pornography is a dangerous weapon in the hands of a pedophile and is used extensively in the sexual victimization of children. Finally, expertise is essential in the investigation of child sexual exploitation. 4 references
