Although there was some concern among staff at the Oregon State Hospital that the inclusion of a female in group therapy for male adolescent sex offenders would undermine group effectiveness, overall the experience has been constructive over the first six months.
Abstract
After more than three years of operation, the first female was admitted to the group at the end of July 1984. She was charged with the sexual molestation of a 6-year-old girl while babysitting her. She has a history of prior offenses, has few meaningful relationships, and has a problem with impulse control. The males in the group were initially intimidated by her as they were embarassed at talking in front of her and felt threatened by her large size and aggressive sexual manner. This provided an opportunity for the group to address the dynamics of female power and empathy for victims' perceptions. Although the staff was concerned that the males would attempt to dominate and scapegoat the girl, this did not happen. Their tendency has been to overprotect her. After six months, male fears of the girl diminished, although they remain more tolerant of her negative behaviors than of one another's. She tends to play out the helpless female role, maintain that she has been victimized by males, and avoid accepting responsibility for her behavior. Overall, the dynamics within the group provide an opportunity for group members to learn about male and female social roles and interactions. There is no obvious progress in the personal growth of the girl, however.
