Abstract
These are related to the conditions of employment and thus provide an insight into the life and work of a nineteenth century police officer. This study is based entirely upon primary source material particularly the "Minutes of the Watch Committee," a ledger containing personnel records (which relates to the period 1859-1900) and the one remaining volume of the Chief Constable's "General Order Book" (which deals with events between August 4, 1871 and June 3, 1973). 72 notes (Author abstract)
