The Asian Youth Substance Abuse Project in San Francisco, Calif., works with high-risk Asian youth in providing a culturally specific, multilevel, and comprehensive alcohol and other drug abuse prevention consortium. The Preschool Stress Relief Project in Atlanta, Ga., is a primary prevention demonstration project that provides training, consultation, and educational resources in holistic stress management techniques for high-risk preschoolers, their parents, and teachers. The Aroostook Mental Health Center in Caribou, Me., provides a broad, community-based prevention program for youth aged 5 to 19, their parents, and community leaders. A comprehensive, community-based prevention program in Lincoln, Neb., aims to shift rural Nebraska alcohol-use norms by organizing training retreats and seminars for community leaders, youth, parents, and teachers. Boys and Girls Clubs demonstration sites have been established in five public housing projects in New York, N.Y., to offer a comprehensive youth development program and an alcohol and other drug prevention program. A school-based, early intervention model in Monaca, Pa., is designed to reduce the risk factors associated with chronic absenteeism and tardiness in elementary and middle schools as well as to address behavioral indicators of potential absenteeism.
