Great Britain's Prevention of Terrorism Act of 1974 was revised in 1976, 1984, and 1989 to expand the government's powers to deal with terrorism.
Abstract
Statistics were compiled on the act's operation during the 12-month period ending September 1990. It was determined that 43 people were detained under the 1989 act during the last quarter; 36 of the detentions were associated with terrorism in Northern Ireland and 7 with international terrorism. Twenty of 192 persons detained over the 12 months were charged with an offense. Extensions beyond 48 hours were granted for 33 of the 192 persons. In the quarter ending September 1990, 56 persons were examined for more than 1 hour but were not detained. During the 12-month period, 14 exclusion orders were made against persons not previously excluded. At the end of September 1990, 93 persons remained excluded, 6 fewer than 12 months earlier. There are no powers under the act to exclude in connection with international terrorism. However, persons detained under the act may be deported, excluded, or removed under the Immigration Act of 1971. 7 tables
