Abstract
There are signs of growing militancy within the ranks of the hard core white supremacists. The intense recruitment of skinheads and prisoners indicates that they are seeking not members but soldiers. Skinheads are valued for their recklessness and youth; prisoners are proven experts in the weapons and drug trades. Both groups view violence as a way of life. Together they have the potential to become the terrorist arm of the white revolutionary movement. In some areas, skinheads are not only preoccupied with racism, but are obsessed with satanism. The same personality disturbances that lead to radical racism have pushed some youths into the total rejection of moral values that is the basis for satanism. The odd language and obscure symbols of satanism are meaningless to a casual observer, but a whole field of police work has been built around recognizing satanic involvement in crimes of violence and vandalism. In addition to recruiting skinheads and prisoners, white supremacists are enlisting black nationalists in an attempt to broaden support for racial separation. Experts on bigotry and violence have called for the U.S. Department of Justice to collect national data on crimes which are motivated by racial, religious or sexual orientation bias. This issue of the Intelligence Report contains a section on legal developments in the fight against hate crimes. and a survey of 1987-1988 activities by the Ku Klux Klan and other radical groups.
