The case studies were developed as part of a research project that gathered information about 49,000 students and almost 10,000 teachers in more than 275 schools in 85 communities across the country. In addition, case studies were conducted of 65 young people. The 11 children attended public schools in the United States during the 1980's. The students' problems included truancy, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, behavioral problems, victimization by child abuse, deafness, and violence.
