This booklet describes the special needs of young girls involved in the juvenile justice system and describes some programs designed to meet their emotional and skill development needs.
Abstract
The available evidence suggests that most girls are institutionalized in detention centers and training schools for relatively minor delinquent acts. This situation continues because of a lack of appropriate community-based options for female delinquents. Advocacy for young women at all levels, in-service training for criminal justice personnel, and the involvement of older female offenders can promote the development of sound policies and needed services in the areas of sexual abuse treatment, services for pregnant adolescents, education, and expanded job training. Four innovative programs are described in this booklet.
