Many State and local law enforcement agencies do not have the resources available to buy certain advanced technologies. Nonetheless, companies marketing the technologies project that law enforcement spending will increase over the next 5 to 10 years as police departments are forced to increase operational efficiency. Studies indicate that police departments want and need updated technologies, especially new information systems. Not only do police departments want to reduce the time it takes to file reports and process criminals, they also want to access records from other police departments, courts, and prison systems. Efforts by the National Institute of Justice are noted that concern the development of performance-based standards to ensure the safety, reliability, and interoperability of law enforcement products; the creation of a technology information network for use by law enforcement agencies to find out what technology is available; and the education of law enforcement agencies about technology procurement.
