Abstract
The interview covered many aspects of drug abuse and treatment, including: (1) why individuals start to use drugs and continue to use; (2) factors initiating treatment; (3) reasons for treating drug users; (4) model treatment programs; (5) policies needed for treatment programs to be effective; (6) goals of these programs; (7) treatment and therapy techniques; (8) who should pay for drug user treatment; (9) optimum case load or staff-patient ratio; (10) desirable staff abilities and attitudes; (11) minimizing staff burnout; (11) preferred site for the program; (12) necessary support systems; (13) roles, rights, obligations, and responsibilities of program participants, including patients; (14) types of ongoing evaluation processes; (15) the nature and timing of follow-up actions; (16) what to do about relapse and dropouts; (17) criteria for evaluating the program and personnel; (18) signs and symptoms for early intervention; (19) drug abuse prevention; (20) ethical considerations; and (21) barriers to effective treatment of drug users.
