Abstract
Part 1 addresses the status of prison populations on September 1, 1993, and committal flows in 1992. This is supplemented by data on escapes in 1992. Part II statistics pertain to certain community-based measures and sanctions ordered in 1991. Data on inmate populations as of September 1, 1993, address the total number of inmates, the detention rate, total prison capacity, and occupancy rate. Statistics also cover variations in the number of inmates, inmate demographic characteristics, and inmate legal status. Data on the length of imprisonment pertain to the total number of days of imprisonment in 1992, the average number of inmates in 1992, and indicator of the average length of imprisonment. The data on community sanctions and measures ordered in 1991 address deferred sentences, exemption from punishment following a finding of guilt, fines, community service, partial prison sentences, and probation.
