Articles in the first part of the book examine the historical roots of community corrections; the philosophy that directs policy formulation and day-to-day activities of those who work in the field; goals; probation systems; and costs and benefits, subsidy modes and start-up recommendations. Part Two focuses on Investigation and Offender Supervision, including: a typology of presentence probation investigators; the problems faced by probation and parole agencies; and probation supervision. Part Three describes alternative sanctions: Intensive Supervision Probation, Intensive Rehabilitation Supervision, community service, and electronic monitors. Part Four discusses the effectiveness of institutional and community-based programs, measuring the performance of community corrections, and predictors of success. Part Five addresses legal and ethical issues. Part Six concerns the future of community corrections and consists of a single article on reintegrating the concept of community into community-based corrections.
