An estimated 1.1 million men and women were in the custody of State and Federal prisons at the end of 1995. An estimated 700,000 adults were on parole at the end of the year. Three hundred ten inmates were under sentences of death during 1995, and 105 had their death sentences removed by means other than execution. State and Federal prisons held 3,054 death row inmates on December 31, 1995. Military services held 2,838 prisoners in 28 facilities on December 31, 1995.
