The case study is presented through descriptions and comments by members of the family of the victim and the family of the shooter. The killing arose from a conflict that escalated into the use of a gun as an expression of rage. The commentary notes that violence stems from a subculture that conditions youth to use violence as a means of relieving the frustration of low self-esteem, poverty, and the absence of a credible promise for the future. The remainder of the video describes the programs that have helped many youth find a nonviolent, positive direction of their behavior and their lives. A church-related program helps black youth understand how the Bible's stories and messages relate to their experiences and provide constructive guidance for those who live in the inner city. The program is helping youth rethink their values and the direction of their lives. Other programs are designed to help youth build their self-esteem through positive achievements in community service. One youth describes the values of her experiences in working with senior citizens, and two youths describe their work as volunteers in a hospital. Another area of concern for inner-city youth is employment opportunities. The Cleveland Beat the Streets Program, a job preparation and training program, is described through interviews with instructors and youth participants. The program teaches the behavioral disciplines necessary for a job, provides instruction in job skills and knowledge, and helps youth find jobs. Counseling continues as youth cope with various problems in their jobs.
