This comprehensive review and discussion of topics and issues concerning policing in urban America has the common thread of community-oriented policing.
Abstract
This expanded third edition incorporates more topics than the first two editions and integrates the findings from current research. The beginning chapters provide a background and history of policing and underscore the presence of the community-based philosophy during the early years of urban policing. The chapters that discuss the foundation of police organization, administration, and socialization highlight this philosophy and are compared with other perspectives that have a different emphasis. The implications of community policing for police recruitment, selection, and training are examined, along with the hazards of police work. Police deviance and its control are discussed in another chapter. A chapter on the hazards of police work addresses occupational stress, family life and divorce, and the management of stress. Consideration of critical issues in policing encompasses minority hiring and promoting, women in police work, the use of force, police pursuits, lawsuits against the police, and the police and the community. The final two chapters focus on the future of policing and careers in law enforcement. Chapter references and a subject index
