Arts programs for young people have been successful in both institutional and community settings, in part because artists bring a very different and powerful perspective to their work with young people and other marginalized groups. The focus of artists is on what is and what can be, not on what is missing. Despite shrinking resources, artists in communities all over the country are teaching young people new ways of acquiring personal power and self-discipline and how they can become engaged in the community. The dramatic impact of arts programs has valuable implications for social service providers, educators, and community leaders working to address drug abuse problems faced by young people.
