Drug treatment professionals know most substance abusers require a combination of techniques to achieve long-term stability, and drug treatment programs in Florida, Illinois, Connecticut, and Arizona illustrate a range of program elements developed by the National Consortium of Treatment Assessment Center Programs.
Abstract
Program elements include detoxification, therapeutic communities and long-term residential treatment, short-term residential treatment, halfway houses, methadone maintenance, outpatient treatment, aftercare, self-help, and support services. The Bradenton Drug Treatment Community (BDTC) in Florida is regarded as a model drug treatment program for offenders between 16 and 24 years of age. The BDTC uses a multidisciplinary team of corrections and drug treatment professionals. The Day Reporting Center (DRC) in Cook County, Illinois, is a pretrial diversion program. The DRC is designed to reduce crowding at the Cook County Jail, to ensure program participants do not commit further crimes and make all scheduled court appearances, and to provide various treatment and counseling services to keep offenders away from drugs and crime. Connecticut's Fresh Start program is a pretrial diversion program that targets young female offenders between 16 and 30 years of age. The Adult Deferred Prosecution Program in Maricopa County, Arizona, gives arrestees who meet certain criteria the chance to opt for drug treatment as an alternative to prosecution. All programs show that, in addition to drug treatment, other areas such as employment, education, and home environment need to be addressed. 5 photographs
