Reasons why crime committed by teenagers seems so widespread are addressed, and ways of promoting strong families and preventing juvenile crime are noted.
Abstract
One of the main reasons why violent and drug-related crimes committed by teenagers appear to be increasing is that media reporting on violence has increased. Another reason is that many adults do not know about programs to help teenagers avoid crime. A community approach to juvenile crime prevention is proposed that is based on providing positive opportunities for young people, effective programs, community values, and strong families. Risk factors for health and behavior problems at community, family, school, and individual levels are identified. A framework for action at the community level is outlined, and successful juvenile crime prevention programs are briefly described. The importance of involving teenagers in community crime prevention programs is emphasized. Tables, figures, and photographs
